28 September 2012

The German hypermarket chain Kaufland has outperformed Metro Cash&Carry and Carrefour on the Romanian market, reporting a €1.32bn turnover for 2011.

Carrefour followed Kaufland with €1.19bn in sales last year, while Metro Cash&Carry came in third with a €1.06bn turnover. Metro had been the market leader since 1996.

Kaufland came to Romania seven years ago and has since opened 75 stores with an average sales area of between 3,000 and 5,000 sqm. It added six new stores to the regional market in 2012 and may open an additional five before the end of the year.
Kaufland is part of the Schwartz Group, which operates the Lidl chain.
