Kaufland raises Czech wages to compete with Lidl

3 May 2018

The grocery chain Kaufland has joined the wage war launched by rival Lidl by raising its minimum wage for employees to CZK 24,000 per month. That’s a 26 percent improvement on current levels, but it will go even higher in some regions such as Prague depending on the shortage of labor. “By raising wages, we want to reward the hard work of our employees,” says spokeswoman Renata Maierl. “We greatly appreciate their high level of work.” Wages have been rising in numerous sectors across the Czech Republic, but Kaufland faces direct competition from its rival Lidl which currently offers its employees CZK 28,000.
