Kaufland’s Prague 6 expansion plans stir up the usual controversy

31 May 2016

Kaufland wants to expand its shopping complex at Vypich in Prague 6. The hypermarket operator plans to add further 40,000 sqm in a separate building, to be built on pillars above the existing parking lot. The four-story building would offer both office and retail space which would be connected to the existing complex. The plan has triggered strong controversy and opposition from some local citizens, who claim the situation at the busy intersection would only become worse if the project were completed and have launched two petitions in an effort to stop it. Kaufland built the hypermarket in 2009 and later added an office building to the property.

The deputy mayor for planning in Prague 6, Eva Smutná argues that the plan does not comply with the city’s current master plan. The company D.N.S. Bubeneč, which Kaufland hired to push the project through the planning process, is owned by former Prague 6 mayor Petr Boček, writes the server echo24.cz.
