Kiska inaugurated as new Slovak president

16 June 2014

Andrej Kiska was inaugurated as Slovakia’s new president on Sunday. He won the recent elections in the country despite having no political experience in the past. In taking the oath of office, he pledged to continue cooperation with the EU and NATO amid security concerns stemming from the situation in its neighbor, Ukraine.

The fourth Slovakia’s president since the country gained independence in 1993 succeeds Ivan Gasparovič, who served two terms. The 51-year-old businessman and philanthropist pulled off a shock defeat of the leftist prime minister Robert Fico who had been heavily favored to win the elections.
