Czech president Vaclav Klaus has criticized university student demonstrations designed to call attention to changes to the education system they claim will be harmful to academic freedom. These include changes in the powers of student control and the introduction of tuition fees. Klaus cancelled a planned visit to the Brno Masaryk University and a lecture he was supposed to give. He said that deep reforms to the education system are necessary and rejected demonstrations as an attempt at political influence.
