Košice airport reports 410,400 passengers served last year, an increase of 15 percent y-o-y. This makes 2015 the third most successful year in the airport’s history, following a peak in 2008 when it handled 600,000 passengers, thanks to the Slovak low-cost air carrier SkyEurope Airlines.
Passenger numbers collapsed after the airline filed for bankruptcy, but two years ago, Hungarian Wizz Air replaced SkyEurope, and opened a line to London, followed by three other destinations. Czech Airlines has also opened a new line from Prague to Kyiv via Košice. Passenger numbers should rise further, as Wizz Air will be opening new routes to Bristol and Doncaster-Scheffield, UK. Eindhoven, Basel and Belfast are being considered as well by Wizz Air, while Polish LOT now plans to begin service to Warsaw.
