Law adopted to enable presidential removal from office

11 April 2012

President Traian Basescu is promoting a law which would enable a referendum on the removal of a president, provided that a majority of registered voters supported the move.
The new version of the law provides that the president’s impeachment required 50% +1 votes of all of Romanians entitled to vote.
It’s thought that the 9 million votes necessary to bring this about would be extremely difficult to achieve.
The new law replaces existing legislation in which a majority of those participating in the referendum would suffice.
