Liberec has announced contracts for the reconstruction of the Uran office building and for the construction of 49 apartments in Na Žižkově Street. For the city, this should be the largest investment launched this year. The costs of the reconstruction of Uranus are estimated at CZK 84 million without tax and for housing construction at CZK120 million net, according to data in the public procurement management system.
Due to rising prices for construction work and materials in recent months, City Hall fears that the resulting price may be higher than expected. In the case of Uranus, built in 1969 near the bus and train stations, however, the city can no longer postpone repairs. Apart from the reconstruction of the ground floor in 2009, the seven-storey Uranus, in which the city has about 150 employees, has not undergone any major repairs. The perimeter cladding falls apart, the windows are also in poor condition. The walkway around therefore protects the scaffolding. “Our revenues are decreasing and our expenses are growing at the same time, but the building is in such a serious condition that we have decided to announce a tender for a supplier and see what offers we will meet,” said Deputy Mayor Radka Loučková Kotasová (YES). The deadline for submission of bids expires on September 3.
Five days later, the deadline for submitting bids for the contract to build 49 apartments should expire. Four connected four-storey houses will be built on the site of the former primary school in Na Žižkově Street in Rochlice. They will be intended for social housing and the city wants to pay most of the costs from the European subsidy. The city would like to have houses built within two years.
Liberec is preparing to announce another, even more expensive investment, which is the reconstruction of the swimming stadium. For him, the cost is estimated at CZk 820 million net. In the case of the swimming pool, however, the town hall does not expect work to begin until next year. Currently, the city’s largest ongoing investment is the reconstruction of Liebieg Palace, which began last September. The reconstruction of the large building into a community center for more than CZK 200 million should end next summer.
This year, the city’s largest investment to date is the construction of the Horská reservoir and feeder for 64 million crowns, which should solve problems with water supply for part of the Ruprechtice district. Even larger is the one in charge of the transport company (DPMLJ), of which Liberec is the majority owner. In July, work began on the first of four stages of modifications to the tram line from Liberec to Jablonec, which should change the track gauge from the metro to 1,435 millimeters of railways. The completion of the complete reconstruction up to Jablonec should, according to estimates, cost a billion crowns, and for the most part it should be paid for by European funds. For the first stage, which is work on an almost four-kilometer section, the transport company will pay CZK 95.5 million net. The work is to be completed by November 19.
