Liberec wants to borrow CZK 1.3 billion for the construction of a new hospital

3 March 2021

The Liberec Region wants to borrow CZK 1.3 billion for the construction of a new Center for Emergency Medicine in Liberec (CUM), and will add another CZK 800 million from its budget. With the demand for credit, the region plans to address not only domestic but also European banks. He would like to have offers by the end of November, and the construction itself should start in the first half of next year, Governor Martin Půta (Mayors for the Liberec Region) told reporters today. The region wants to repay the ten-year loan by 2035.

The construction of the new center has been prepared by the Liberec Regional Hospital for over ten years, the costs are estimated at 3.4 billion crowns, including VAT. The cities of Liberec and Turnov, which together with the Liberec Region own the largest medical facility in the region, will also participate in the financing. According to the governor, the hospital itself will also participate in the financing of the costly project; the region also wants to use European subsidies.

The hospital desperately needs a new pavilion. It lacks a uniform reception and central laboratories, but also enough space for parking. In addition, the work of paramedics is complicated by the fragmentation of the area. The hospital operates in 38 properties, of which 14 are older than one hundred years, for example, the surgery pavilion was built 80 years ago. The youngest building is a pharmacy, which is over 30 years old. Since 1978, the hospital has not built any new building, only repairs or expands it.

Work on the project began in the middle of last year with the demolition of three houses in Kristiánova Street, on the site of which a parking house will be built. Across the street will be the emergency medicine center itself. The six-storey pavilion should be about 120 meters long, about 40 meters wide and 27 meters high. The project envisages larger operating theaters, laboratories and a bed section. There will be 330 places for cars in the parking house with the entrance from Jablonecká street.
