Lidl ousts Kaufland as Czech No. 1

28 February 2020

Lidl is the new king of the Czech retail market, overtaking the former leader Kaufland. The discount retailer raised its revenues 10 percent in 2019 to CZK 58bn to become the country’s leading grocery chain. Its spokeswoman Zuzana Holá says the accomplishment is a result of a sustained program of store renovations. “We’re adapting the presentation of goods in our stores, we’re gradually modernizing them and we’re opening new ones in the centers of towns in office or residential complexes. At the same time we’re building stores in smaller towns.” Lidl opened 12 new outlets in 2019, bringing its Czech network to 255. It shelled out CZK 3bn on modernizations plus the beginning of construction of a new logistics center near Kladno. Lidl plans to continue its expansion during 2020.
