Limits on presidential election spending

14 June 2012

The Lower house of the Czech Parliament approved a bill setting limits on spending in the presidential election campaign. Candidates will be allowed to spend a maximum of CZK 40m for the first round of voting and CZK 10m if a second round is necessary. The bill is expected to pass upper house, the Senate as well.
The bill is aimed at improving transparency in political party financing. Candidates will have to publish their accounts on the Internet within two months of the elections. The draft bill follows the February approval of a constitutional law on direct presidential elections, to be held in February 2013.
