9 April 2020

Lufthansa has halted operations of its low-cost subsidiary Germanwings, saying it would take months for global travel restrictions are lifted and that it could be years before demand to return to the pre-pandemic levels. The airline has also reduced its capacity at the Munich and Frankfurt airports and has grounded over 40 aplnes. Germanwings’ sister company Eurowings will also be reducing its long-haul flights radically and will reduce the size of its fleet of Airbus A320’s. Lufthansa is holding urgent talks with the German government for financial help aslong with the governments of Austria and Belgium. Observers believe that its weak position may force it to give up shares in the company in return for any bailout.
