Marriott gets US approval for Cuban hotel investments

Starwood Hotels & Resorts and Marriott International have each been approved by the U.S. Treasury Department to operate hotels in Cuba. Marriott’s intends to enter Cuba with its Marriott brands, to provide hospitality training for Cuban nationals, and to generate new economic opportunities for businesses supplying the hospitality industry. The company’s policies including supporting opportunities for youth, women and other communities in Cuba.

Starwood Hotels, whose brands include Sheraton, W and Westin, also received approval to make Havana’s 83-room Hotel Inglaterra part of Starwood’s Luxury Collection and reflag the city’s 186-room Hotel Quinta Avenida under Starwood’s Four Points by Sheraton brand, with both hotels slated for renovations.
