As many as 150,000 sqm builders could lose their jobs in Poland next year, if fears of massive lay-offs in the construction sector prove well-founded. Redundancies have already emerged among Poland’s major players, such as Hydrobudowa Polska, after the company filed for bankruptcy this summer.
According to the daily Puls Biznesu, nearly 850 people are expected to lose their job in Hydrobudowa. “We’re currently in talks with the company’s management board, so no details can be disclosed at this stage. But according to our estimates, the workforce could be reduced by 700 jobs,” says Henryk Stypka, president of the trade union Solidarność in Hydrobudowa.
The PBG group, which owns Hydrobudowa, now employs 6,000 people. “Decisions will be taken individually, by the boards of the particular companies [making up the group]. So far, none of the number could be disclosed,” says Mariusz Rózacki, the new chairman of PBG.
