The Miami Beach Commission is considering plans to build a hotel at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Built in 1957, it sits in the heart of the city’s South Beach district offering over 500,000 square feet of exhibition space. Over the years, it has hosted countless political and large-scale business events. In 1989, the center went through a $92m renovation and an expansion that doubled its size to over 1,000,000 square feet of flex-space.
Since 2008, the center continued to improve with an additional $35m million worth of upgrades, but city officials hope to carry out even bigger plans for the facility.
The planned hotel would be located on the corner of 17th St and Convention Center Drive. The convention center is set to receive a $500m renovation with the goal of attracting larger conventions. The facility could be leased out to a private developer, but such a move would require a referendum with 60 percent voter approval.
