Ministry greenlights CZK 8bn modernization of Ostrava railway hub

13 January 2017

The Czech Transport Ministry greenlighted plans to modernize the railway hub in Ostrava. It approved the feasibility study for the project with costs expected to run to CZK 7.7bn. The section between Svinov and Ostrava’s main train station will be rebuilt, and a multi-level interchange will be constructed. The modernization will allow trains to travel at 120 km/hour. The Ostrava střed station will be also reconstructed. With costs estimated at CZK 7.7bn, this will be one of the largest railway projects since 2000 in the Czech Republic. Only Nové spojení, the system of tunnels and bridges under Vítkov hill in Prague, was more expensive, costing CZK 9bn. The national railway operator SŽDC hopes to be able to break ground in Ostrava in 2021 and complete construction in four years.
