Ministry of Economy wants the Industrial park in southern Slovakia

20 January 2021

One of the largest industrial parks in southern Slovakia will be established in Rimavská Sobota. Its construction was approved by the government on Wednesday at the proposal of the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic. The total budget should reach a maximum of EUR 9.843 million. The park should be established by the end of 2023.

The Rimavská Sobota district has long had the highest registered unemployment rate among all districts in Slovakia. According to the ministry, the new park is a basic precondition for attracting new investments in the region.

“The Rimavská Sobota Industrial Park will be a significant impetus for the entire region for further economic and social development, thus contributing to the long-term goal of reducing regional disparities,” the ministry points out. The park will be built by the company MH Invest belonging to the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic. In the presented material, it also reminds that within the Banská Bystrica self-governing region, it currently registers only five industrial parks with an area of more than ten hectares.

Of these, only one does not register significant deficiencies in terms of connection to technical and transport infrastructure or in terms of settlement of property and legal relations. At the same time, investors have long preferred land in a state of absolute readiness to start construction, such as, approved zoning plans, resolved property rights to the affected properties, ideally built or at least permitted connections to individual engineering networks.

“The absence of such parks means a major competitive disadvantage for Slovakia compared to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, with which we most often compete in obtaining strategic investments (Czechia, Poland, Hungary, Romania),” points out the Ministry of Economy. According to him, this disadvantage is multiplied by the length of permitting procedures and, together with the fragmentation of land, practically repeatedly disqualifies Slovakia in many decision-making processes on the location of a new investment.

The land defined for the purpose of building the Rimavská Sobota Industrial Park is located on the northern side of the town of Rimavská Sobota on the border of its cadastral territory. These are two plots with an area of about 650 thousand square meters. The construction of the R2 expressway, which will line the site from the south side, is being prepared and planned in the given area.
