Momentum gathers for early Czech elections

8 October 2012

Early elections are better than uncertainty, according to the ODS deputies head Zbyněk Stanjura. If the government does not have sufficient support in the lower house to push through its program, he would push for a political agreement on early elections, he said in a Czech TV debate on Sunday.
If the chamber of deputies would dissolve itself, elections could be held within 60 days and no interim government would be necessary. The government coalition of ODS, TOP 09 and LIDEM has at best a fragile majority in the lower house, with some of ODS deputies rejecting key bills, such as the tax hike bill, which PM Petr Nečas has called crucial to his government. The opposition social democrats are considering early elections as necessary as well, with their leader Jeronym Tejc saying the issue should be discussed at the next session of the lower house of Parliament.
