Morawiecki: Poland is ready for an embargo on Russian coal

2 March 2022

Poland is ready to introduce an embargo on Russian coal, but needs a guarantee from the European Commission that it will not be punished for this step, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki informed. He pointed out that the implementation of the embargo is part of international trade and the power to introduce it in the case of Poland was transferred to the EU authorities,

“Answering […] the question about the coal embargo – we are ready to do it at any time, every day, I only need one thing from the European Commission and I need one word of assurance that Poland will not be punished for this step, because the implementation of the embargo is part of international trade, which is a competence that has been transferred to the level of the European Commission,” Morawiecki said during a press conference.

“I need one word of assurance from the European Commission that Poland will not be punished again for this action and then we will be ready to introduce an embargo on Russian coal,” he added.

Poland imports around one fifth of the coal consumed, including around 75% from Russia.
