The career of Csanad Szegedi, a rising star famous in Hungary for his anti-Semetic rhetoric, has been cut short after the 30-year old politician admitted that he is Jewish. The revelation came via an audio recording of Szegedi in which he tries to convince a convicted felon to keep quiet about his ancestry.
He’s since been thrown out of the party, the nationalist Jobbik party, on the grounds that he tried to bribe the person to keep quiet and is being stripped of his post as a European Parliament deputy. Jobbik denies he was axed as a result of his ancestry, a claim which not all observers are taking at face value. Confronted with anti-Jewish statements he’s made in the past, Szegedi has apologized for any offense they may have caused the Jewish community and promised to visit Auschwitz.
