Montenegro was invited to join NATO on Wednesday. “NATO foreign ministers have just taken the historic decision to start accession talks for Montenegro to become the 29th member,” said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
“Today we open a new chapter. It is a great day for my country and for the alliance,” said Igor Luksic, Montenegro’s foreign minister. The Montenegrin parliament voted in September to support the country’s accession to NATO. The Kremlin saw the move as a “provocation.”
