NBR cuts benchmark interest rate to 5.25%

2 April 2012

The National Bank of Romania (NBR) has decided to lower the monetary policy rate by 0.25 percentage points to 5.25 percent per year from the present 5.50 percent.
This follows identical rate cuts of a quarter of a point in February, January and November, as the policy appears to be to try to re-start an economy that appears to be slipping into recession.
In addition, the central bank decided to maintain the existing levels of minimum reserve requirement ratios on both leu-denominated and foreign currency-denominated liabilities of credit institutions.
