New city hall for Prague 7 rejected in referendum

16 January 2013

Calling the idea overpriced, voters rejected Prague 7’s plans to build a new CZK 1bn city hall in a special referendum that took place last week. Jan Čižinský, a representative of the initiative behind the referendum, told Czech Radio the project would only house 240 employees. Three civil associations and three opposition political parties joined forces to organize the referendum, where voters voiced their displeasure, sending a clear message to local politicians about the need for more transparency and less spending. Residents in Prague 8 and 10 have similar concerns, Čižinský said, and are looking to Prague 7 for ideas.
