The last portion of the D8 motorway through České středohoří has not been completed, despite the fact that construction started in 2007. Work on key artery connection between the Czech Republic and Germany stalled thanks to the protests of local civic activists. However, a proposed new law, modelled on similar German legislation, would make the process smoother, by allowing the Motorway and Roads Directorate to classify certain roads as strategic infrastructure projects, subject to approval by Parliament.
The law will also impact landowners as it clears the way for the expropriation land needed for “strategic” investments. Czech MPs want to add a paragraph that will encourage landowners to sell their land immediately by offering monetary incentives.
