New York Times accuses Orbán of spending more on stadiums than hospitals

29 October 2019

The New York Times wrote a critical article of the Hungarian government’s spending habits, noting that more money is earmarked for stadiums than for the country’s hospitals. The article points out that while the village of Felcsut, for example, has a 3,500-seat stadium, some of the country’s biggest hospitals seem to lack enough funding for soap in the women’s restroom. (Felcsut, coincidently, is where Prime Minister Viktor Orbán grew up.) An increasing number of doctors have been leaving the country over the last decade, according to the New York Times, yet the government continues to give tax breaks to companies that invest in Hungarian sports institutions.
