The city of Bucharest’s administration spent about €5m to build special bike paths, but they have proven to be totally non-functional.
Built between 2008 and 2012, many are now being dismantled by police because of the danger they pose to both pedestrians and cyclists. The Evenimentul Zilei newspaper reports that disastrous planning sent bikers through public transport stops, flower shops, restaurants, kiosks, lighting poles or advertisement panels.
After joining the European Union in 2008, Romania began to encourage ecological self-transport in its larger cities, as an alternative to road traffic. But the wish to exercise and have environmentally friendly transportion has proven to be a nightmare for the bikers, and everyone in their way, adds Evenimentul Zilei.
