Romanian President Traian Basescu survived an impeachment referendum over the weekend. The Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) announced a 45.92-percent voter turnout, which was below the 50 percent needed to oust Basescu from office.
The effort to unseat the conservative Basescu, suspended by parliament on July 6, were led by Prime Minister Victor Ponta who claims that the president overstepped his powers.
The dispute had been criticized by EU officials, as it plunged the country into deeper fiscal uncertainty, delaying policy decisions and having a heavy impact on the national currency, which tumbled to record lows.
