In a major blow to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, opposition parties swept the local elections on Sunday, taking Budapest’s leadership away from the ruling Fidesz party as well as several other regional cities across the country. Gergely Karacsony, Green party politician, beat out two-term Fidesz incumbent Istvan Tarlos with more than 50 percent of the vote to be the next mayor of Budapest. Tarlos took just 44 percent of the vote. Opposition parties also won 14 of the capital’s 23 districts. This marks the first major upset for Fidesz since 2010.
