Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said he will name the new governor of the central bank the day before the contract of the current governor, András Simor, expires. Simor is due to step down March 2, having headed the bank for the past six years. Orbán’s push to gain greater authority over the bank brought him into conflict with the IMF and the European Union last year. He’s pledge to tone down his challenge to the central bank’s independence, but this appointment could test this claim.
