Orlen’s Czech business under fire from FM Kuba

28 November 2012

The Polish fuel kingpin Orlen could be facing serious problems on the Czech market, after lawmaker Martin Kuba announced plans to take back the controlling stake of Unipetrol, which was privatized by the Czech government few years ago. “The privatization of Unipetrol was unfortunate,” the Czech Minister of Industry and Trade, Martin Kuba, told the business weekly Euro. “The state should go back to this business.”
“The decision to privatize Unipetrol was taken by the Czech government years ago, and PKN Orlen was invited to participate in the tender,” said an Orlen spokesperson. Orlen took a part in the privatization, won, took over Unipetrol assets, and had invested more than €1bn in the company’s development over the years.
