In the first three months of 2012, major retailers have opened 43 new stores. The most expansive is Mega Image which was added 17 new units.
At the end of March 2012, the retailer include 107 supermarkets under the Mega Image brand and another 15 stores Shop & Go. Expansion plan for this year targeting a total of 80 units.
Lidl, another expansive operator, inaugurated in the first quarter 7 new spaces. The retailer has in mind to open a third distribution center in Cluj area.
Carrefour opened 3 new supermarkets (Carrefour Market) and other three franchise stores (Carrefour Express). In late March, the French retailer was 79 units, including 25 hypermarkets, 50 supermarkets (Carrefour Market) and 4 stores (Carrefour Express).
Kaufland, the most expansive hypermarket operator in 2011, opened four stores in the first three months of the year, thus reaching a total of 75 units.
Like last year, the most expansive were supermarket operators (Mega Image and Carrefour Market) and discount stores (Lidl, Penny), while cash & carry stores (Metro Cash & Carry Selgros) and the hypermarkets (Carrefour, Cora, Auchan) have kept the number of units, according to GfK company.
