In a controversial move, the Romanian Parliament suspended President Traian Basescu with 256 deputies voting in favor and 114 against, said Georgian Pop, secretary of the Chamber of Deputies.
The president attended the parliament debates where he tried to prove that he didn’t breach the constitution. This was the main reason for which the political coalition Liberal Social Union (USL) began the suspension procedure.
Crin Antonescu, president of the Senate and of the liberal party PNL said that the suspension project is perfectly democratic and constitutional. However, the action has worried European Union authorities who now have sudden worries about the rule of law in the country.
A referendum for the impeachment of President Basescu will be organized on July 29 and until then, Crin Antonescu will act as interim president.
