Payment problems affect 9% of hotel businesses in Poland

25 June 2021

At the end of April this year, arrears of hotels and other hosting companies amounted to over PLN 1 billion, according to the data of the BIG InfoMonitor Debtors Register and the BIK database. This is mainly due to hotels with PLN 947 million in arrears. Payment problems affect 9% of hotel businesses.

“The pandemic struck when the industry was on a clear upward wave, there were more and more hotel facilities, the number of tourists using hotel accommodation facilities was steadily growing, and at the same time, the financial capacity of guests grew, and with them the expectations as to the standard of services offered. COVID-19 stopped this trend. and thwarted many plans of hotel companies. While those focused on tourists have a chance to return to the boom, the condition of entities serving mainly business stays, company meetings or congresses is questionable. This reality may look different after the pandemic,” said the president BIG InfoMonitor Sławomir Grzelczak.

Other than hotels, tourist accommodation establishments and places of short-term accommodation, i.e. camp centers, holiday homes, guest quarters, unmanned houses, agritourism and youth hostels together have less than one tenth of hotel arrears – PLN 91.4 million.

In the case of arrears, unpaid loans prevail, hence very large differences in the average non-credit and credit arrears of companies offering accommodation, reported BIG InfoMonitor

The data of the BIG InfoMonitor Debtors Register and BIK show that arrears in payments to suppliers and banks have 1,760 active, suspended and closed companies related to the accommodation business. Their total debts currently amount to PLN 1.044 billion, BIG InfoMonitor reported.
