A protest over PGE’s plan to close some 26 regional offices and 75 power stations in 2013 took place yesterday outside the company’s Warsaw’s headquarters. Before the event, demonstrators were said to have numbered 3,000 but in the end, just over 1,000 unionized PGE workers staged a strike that has since ended with no agreement.
“None of the ministers came to us, so the protests will continue,” one of strikers told Polish Press Agency (PAP). The state-owned energy giant has assured the public that none of its workers would lose their jobs, but the union members are worried the company’s tune may change once the dust settles. Other industrial action could be in the offing, meanwhile, as 5,500 unionized workers of Enea Operator are demanding raises of PLN 300 per employee. The company has yet to address those demands.
