Poland’s oil giant PKN Orlen begun to drill for shale gas this week in the Mazovian region, becoming the first Polish company that took steps in the area, after the report on the Poland’s supply of shale gas reserves was published this year. The company hopes to find 4,000 cubic metres of shale gas in the small village of Goździkowo by the end of the year, and plans to continue the works only if successful. “The cost of the investment should be revealed this fall, when the company’s strategy is planned to be updated” said Jacek Krawiec, the chairman of PKN Orlen board. “So far, all we can say is that the borehole costed USD 15m,” he added. The drilling of 4 km borehole in Goździkowo should take up to 60 days. Orlen is one of the two state-owned companies that had received the licences for the shale gas extraction across Poland, after PGNiG.
