PKP Intercity services were used by 20.3 million travellers during the holidays

5 September 2023

PKP Intercity services were used by 20.3 million travellers from the beginning of June to the end of August 2023, the company said. This is 1.8 million more than during last year’s summer season and 7.9 million more than two years ago. Since January, 44.9 million passengers have chosen PKP Intercity’s services.

In June, 6.2 million passengers travelled on board PKP Intercity trains, while in July, 7 million passengers travelled. In August, even more people used the carrier’s services – 7.1 million. Thus, August 2023 became the month with the highest attendance in the company’s history. This year’s 20.3 million passengers is 10% more than in the same period last year, when nearly 18.5 million people chose to travel with PKP Intercity. It is also a significant increase (44%) on the June-August 2019 period – the last holiday before the pandemic. Then, more than 14.2 million passengers used the carrier’s services, the company announced.

During the holidays, more than 200,000 people travelled on board PKP Intercity trains on an average day. Record-breaking interest occurred around long weekends – on 11 August, PKP Intercity trains had 254 thousand passengers. As every year, journeys to the Polish seaside were the most popular – journeys between Warsaw and the Tricity were the most popular, it was stressed.

Carrying more than 20 million passengers would not have been possible without additional rolling stock support. Each day, an average of 430 trains went on the tracks during the holidays. In addition, during major cultural events, PKP Intercity launched additional trainsets. From June to the end of August, the carrier reinforced around 1,250 trains with additional 1,750 carriages. The largest number of seats on trains was prepared on routes between the largest agglomerations and to the largest tourist centres, such as Tri-City, Olsztyn, Ustka, Kołobrzeg and Świnoujście. The network of connections included 413 destinations and 463 commercial points.

From the beginning of the year until the end of August, nearly 45 million people have already travelled on PKP Intercity trains. This is 16% better than at the same time last year – then after eight months there were more than 38.6 million passengers. This is also a 37% better result than in the same period of 2019, when PKP Intercity boasted 32.7 million travellers after August. It is worth recalling that in the whole of 2018, 46 million passengers used the carrier’s services, slightly more than in the first eight months of this year. The figures indicate that the company is likely to transport more than 60 million people by December this year, PKP concluded.
