The Polish rail operator PKP PLK could lose PLN 1bn in funding from the EU, after modernization work on the tracks linking Kraków and Katowice was put on hold. The project was originally set for completion at the end of 2014, but that was before the general contractor of the project, Przedsiębiorstwo Napraw Infrastruktury, went bankrupt. So far, just 10 percent of the modernization work has been carried out. The project needs to be completed by 2015, otherwise the Polish operator will lose 85 percent of its EU funding. The investors are quickly looking for a new contactor.
