Planned train tunnel to cut time to Dresden to one hour

18 May 2018

The Czech Ministry of Transportation, which is preparing the way to build a train tunnel under the mountains on the route to Dresden, has agreed to let design work be carried out by Deutsche Bahn. The operations in the tunnel will be carried out according to German regulations. The Czech state will complete a contract with Czech Railways by the end of the year detailing how the project will move ahead as well as establishing how much the investment is going to cost. The tunnel’s construction is seen as the most efficient way to deal with the growing level of cargo being shipped by train between the two countries. It will also cut the time spent between Prague and Dresden to just one hour. The Czech News Agency reports that the new line could be ready by 2030 and that its completion is likely to cost around €5bn.
