The Triple Five Group and the Graham Cos. have received preliminary approval from the Miami-Dade County Commission for the development of the mixed use American Dream Miami. The $4 billion mega mall will now go to state agencies for review. The comprehensive development master plan (CDMP) applications are expected to return before the county commission in April and May for a final adoption hearing. The mega mall will be located at the intersection of Florida’s Turnpike at Interstate 75 on a 19.4 acre site.
Billed as the largest mall and amusement park in North America, the scheme will feature 6.2 million sqf of commercial space, 2,000 hotel rooms, 3.5 million sqf of retail and 1.5 million sqf of entertainment. The developer’s application claims the property would attract 40 million visitors a year, more than double the number of people who visit Disney’s Magic Kingdom. “What we are trying to create is an economic engine,” Triple Five Principal Don Ghermezian said, “a reason for people to stay in Miami instead of going to Orlando and Universal and a way to keep those tourist dollars here.”
