A gas transit deal between Russia and Poland that’s been in place for decades now is due to expire at the end of May, but it looks unlikely to be renewed this time. Warsaw has committed itself to aligning its energy regulations with European Union rules and to limit its dependence on Russian fuel, which had grown for decades.
The position will not come as a surprise to Moscow, as Warsaw declared repeatedly that it wouldn’t buy Russian gas after 2022, when another long-term supply deal between the two countries is due to end. Instead, it will take pipeline deliveries from Norway and buy sea-borne cargoes of liquefied natural gas from a variety of suppliers, including from the United States.
