19 October 2023

The average value of a shopping cart of retail chains increased by 9.28% y/y to PLN 285.05 in September 2023, according to a report by ASM Sales Force Agency. The average price of a shopping cart containing the most popular daily necessities remained almost at the same level as a month ago at PLN 285.05 (up PLN 0.03).

“Although official inflation rates are lower from month to month, ASM Sales Force Agency’s expert analysis shows that price changes look a bit different for the most popular everyday products. Our latest survey shows that in September the average price of a shopping cart remained almost at the same level as the month before, at PLN 285.05, an increase of PLN 0.03. Slight price increases were recorded in five chains, and in the remaining eight chains the prices of the surveyed products were lower than in August. And when it comes to comparing September 2023 to last year, an increase in the prices of the surveyed products was observed in 9 out of 12 analyzed chains. In our opinion, in the autumn, retail chains will compete hard for customers and their wallets. The fight between the largest players is already clearly visible, as evidenced by the fact that for the second consecutive year we have seen a change in the leadership seat, which, after Lidl, is now occupied by Ladybug,” said ASM Sales Force Agency managing director Zbigniew Sierocki.

Analyzing the basket based on the lowest prices of products reported among all locations of the surveyed chains, it was indicated that customers could pay PLN 194.14 (PLN 17.87 less than in August this year), while assuming the highest prices – PLN 344.99 (PLN 4.87 less than in August this year). The difference between the cheapest and most expensive basket in September 2023 was PLN 150.85, which was PLN 13 higher than in August this year. The sum of the minimum basket in September 2023 was 2.82% lower than a year ago, while the maximum basket was 7.4% more expensive year-on-year in September 2023.

Among the categories of traditional chains, the cheapest shopping could again be done at discount stores – PLN 263.95. On the other hand, in the comparison of sales channels, the highest average prices of the surveyed products in the shopping cart were recorded in e-grocery – PLN 355.07. In September 2023, we paid PLN 0.84 less for online shopping than the month before. In contrast, the cheapest shopping (PLN 285.05) could be done in traditional stores, i.e. chains with stationary sales, it was indicated.

A comparison of the prices of product categories, determined on the basis of selected 40 products, shows that in September 2023 relative to 2022, 9 out of 10 analyzed categories of the surveyed products became more expensive: stimulants and beer, dairy products, additives, dry goods, frozen foods, meat, cold cuts and fish, household chemicals and cosmetics, beverages and sweets. Fat products were the only ones to decrease year-on-year (16.81%). On the other hand, dry goods were the most expensive. In September this year, the increase was 21.51% against 2022. ASM Sales Force Agency experts’ calculations further show that additives became more expensive by 17.73%, confectionery by 14.64%, and household chemicals and cosmetics by 13.27%. Each of the analyzed product groups saw price changes, but the smallest difference was found in the dairy category (more expensive by 1.4% in September 2023), according to the report.
