Poland plans for Russian embargo fallout

11 August 2014

The Polish government has prepared a 12-month plan for fruit and vegetable exporters, whose business will be heavily hit by the Russian embargo, Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki said. The Polish government estimates its produce exporters will suffer up to €500m in losses. Poland’s ministry of agriculture is looking for alternative EU markets for its Polish producers.

“We basically have a 12-month plan that would ease the effects of Russian sanctions, which, in a worst case scenario could lead to the withdrawal of Polish products from the market,” said Sawicki. “It may turn out to be difficult to find new buyers on the other markets, as Russia is currently expanding its embargo into other European markets.” The Russian embargo is making the EU markets far more competitive.
