Poland’s unemployment rate increased to 10.1 percent in August, up from the 10 percent posted in July, according to Eurostat. The average rate posted within the EU region was at 11.4 percent in August. However, the Polish Statistical Office, GUS, estimated the jobless rate in Poland to have risen to 12.4 percent in August – the highest level recorded since 1995. Still, the news has economists breathing a sigh of relief, as they had been predicting much worse.
As for other EU countries, the jobless rate increased by the highest margin in Spain, reaching 25.1 percent in August, while at the other extreme, Austria’s hit 4.5 percent.
