Poland seeks EU support against Russian sanctions

6 August 2014

European retail chains could help cushion the financial fallout of sanctions recently imposed by Russia against Polish fruit exporters. In retaliation for EU sanctions against Russia and Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has banned imports from Polish apple producers. Polish Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki will meet with European officials on Thursday to talk about increasing the supply of Polish products on EU markets. A group of experts is set to present a full report on the Polish fruit market in Brussels, showing that Russia is Poland’s biggest apple market.

“As the conflict heats up, it’s important that the Polish and European retail chains increase the amount of Polish products sold on the EU market,” Sawicki told TVN 24, adding that the Polish government is already looking for alternative European markets for Polish fruit producers.
