Fierce debate over a new policy targeting abuse of power and bribery within Polish companies has petered out. The chief of the Polish Antimonopoly Office, Małgorzata Krasnodębska-Tomkiel came under fire earlier this year after proposing that top managers at companies be held personally liable in cases involving cartels, price collusion or abuse of power. Companies guilty of breaking this new policy will face high financial penalties. “We decided to introduce the financial penalties to Polish law for all the managers who are involved in cartels. According to our research, many of the Polish managers earn several millions a year, so the minimum penalty would be PLN 0.5m,” said Krasnodębska-Tomkiel. “The penalty can not be too low, if they are to be a preventive measure.”
