Polish corporations urge not to increase distance to 700m in windmill law

20 February 2023

Global corporations operating in Poland: Google, Mercedes, IKEA, Amazon, as well as the Metallurgical Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Association of Cement Manufacturers, the Polish Chamber of Automotive Industry and Ozar Cement have appealed to the prime minister and parliament to realize the potential of green energy by not increasing the minimum distance of windmills from buildings from 500 to 700 meters, the Polish Wind Energy Association (PWEA) reported.

As companies with ambitious sustainability goals, we have been investing in renewable energy for years. Today, green energy is not just a new fad – it’s a necessity. In order to effectively reduce our environmental impact and remain competitive, our companies are prioritizing prioritize investments in those markets where green electricity is readily available. We see huge growth potential for our operations in Central and Eastern Europe, and Poland is a particularly interesting market for us. Together, we would like to have a real impact on strengthening Poland’s position as a key market for our future investments, according to the appeal document.

According to the appeal’s authors, any attempts to limit further development of wind energy are a missed opportunity for Poland to attract new investments, create new jobs and realize its full potential as a European hub for many global corporations.

Using the latest technology that wind energy offers, we can have fewer wind turbines generating three times as much energy, while being more environmentally friendly. Each 1 GW in onshore wind turbines generates as much electricity annually as the entire Podlaskie province consumes. The ability to develop projects within 500 meters of development yields 1 GW of additional power per year. Raising it to 700 meters means less than half that power, the appeal reads.

Without the contribution of green energy, the Polish economy risks losing its competitiveness and market attractiveness. Changing the minimum distance from 500 to 700 meters significantly limits the potential of onshore wind power in the coming decade, and thus the insufficient amount of green energy on the grid, the appeal concluded.
