Polish government proposes new housing subsidies program

6 June 2016

Poland’s prime minister Beata Szydło has introduced her government’s new housing subsidies program, called “Mieszkanie plus”, as funds in the previous fund are quickly running short. In addition to a contribution of PLN 2,500 per sqm, the new version of the program includes regulations aimed to make the country’s rental housing market more competitive. The new government has also established what it called a National Housing Fund (Narodowy Fundusz Mieszkaniowy), in which it will gather a land bank from all state-run institutions, including, among others, PKP (the Polish Real Estate Railways), in exchange for a share in the new fund. Poland’s minister of infrastructure and construction, Andrzej Adamczyk, warned that the housing shortage in Poland can’t be solved entirely. “Nearly 40 percent of Poles can’t afford to buy a flat. This is why we decided to introduce this new fund using the state’s resources ,” he said. The bill still needs to be passed by the lower house.
