Poland’s retail market was hit by a significant drop last year, with the number of bankruptcies filed rising 24 percent. According to the daily Puls Biznesu, the sector was strongly affected by slowdown in the Polish economy, which has eroded the consumer’s buying power. Domestic demand decreased last year, stripping many local companies of their liquidity.
On the other, the FMCG sector is consolidating, the daily points out, which is having a dangerous impact on small and medium businesses. The largest discount chains are benefiting from the turmoil, as they thrive on weakening consumer confidence.
