PORR to build production hall for new generation e-cars in Munich

13 December 2022

PORR has been awarded the contract for the deconstruction and new construction of parts of the BMW Group plant in Munich. This is being carried out under particularly challenging conditions: While automobile production and plant logistics continue, an existing production hall will be removed meter by meter and a new one will be built. Completion is scheduled for 2026.

The contract for Austria’s PORR includes the dismantling of the previous engine production facility at the main Munich plant and the construction of the future assembly for all-electric New Class vehicles. It involves a total gross floor area of approximately 150,000 m2.

“This is one of the most challenging construction projects in our more than 150-year history. This is because vehicle production must not be impaired by our construction activities,” explains PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss. “So while production continues, we are removing the existing hall meter by meter and pulling up the new hall on the freed-up space in just as small a way.”

The cramped conditions of the plant, which is located in the middle of the city of Munich, pose a particular challenge. The three factory gates and the logistics areas are almost one hundred percent full. To ensure undisturbed plant processes, the entire construction project is therefore accompanied by a lean construction process from planning to completion and mapped in a BIM construction process simulation.

Demolition will start in February 2024, and construction is scheduled to be completed as early as November 2026, when the new hall will be available for production.

In this challenging project, PORR is offering concentrated expertise from within the company. In addition to the divisions for major projects and construction preparation, several subsidiaries are also involved. pde Integrale Planung was commissioned with the planning, and PORR Umwelttechnik with the deconstruction. IAT is responsible for the roof, Stump Franki for the civil engineering. H+E Haustechnik und Elektro is responsible for the technical building equipment. Elin and Max Bögl were brought in as external partners. “This is a showcase project for partnership-based project management,” says a delighted Strauss.
