Potravinová banka Vysočina wants to buy and modify the building of a former glass factory in nearby Světlá nad Sázavou. The chairman of the Potravinová banka Vysočina, Miroslav Krajcigr announced yesterday. it is negotiating a subsidy for the project for CZK 18.9 million.

According to the Environment Operational Program website, the selection committee recommended the project for funding last month.

According to the chairman, the bank needs larger storage spaces because the volume of food it redistributes to needy people has increased significantly. “In this period, when there was covid and the Ukrainian crisis, we already had quite a few problems with the use of space, we were on the edge,” he said. Thanks to its own real estate, the food bank will save on rent, and it should also have better options for drawing subsidies.

The building in Svetelská Komenského street is currently leased by the food bank. Thanks to the subsidy, he will be able to buy it and replace the bad old windows with new ones. Then he will raise money for further repairs. The bank should gradually move there. In approximately four years, only its smaller warehouse will remain in Ledč nad Sázavou.

According to Eva Šilhanová, the head of the bank, the number of people who need food aid is still increasing, and these are local residents. “We don’t have basic food at this moment – flour, milk, oil, rice. We have a few boxes of pasta,” she said. The bank has better supplies in the drug store. “We always have less before the collection, but we have never been so selected,” she pointed out.

The autumn round of food collection in stores organized by the Czech Federation of Food Banks will be on November 12. Banka Vysočiny, together with other organizations, will arrange the collection in 21 stores. Donations from five stores will go directly to the bank.

Potravinová banka Vysočina is a non-state non-profit organization whose goal is to fight against hunger, poverty and food waste. Last year, it distributed 376 tons of food, 152 tons more than the previous year. Food that is left in shops and other establishments is provided by charities, social unions and other organizations.
